How to use the hedge calculator

Enter the cash stake and odds of your original bet, then the current odds on its exact opposite. Calculate to see the additional stake and both net outcomes.

This hedge bet calculator accepts American or decimal odds. Switching the format converts the prices you have already entered, so you can paste odds from any sportsbook without converting them by hand.

What the result includes

Net profit subtracts both stakes from the winning return. The calculation assumes two exclusive, exhaustive outcomes and no fees, voids or pushes.

The hedge stake is rounded to the cent, and each outcome is then recalculated from that rounded stake. If the two outcomes differ by a cent, the result shows both figures rather than hiding the difference.

A hedge can also lock in a loss

Equalizing the outcomes does not guarantee a positive result. Different settlement rules, a draw or an unmatched bet can leave a position unprotected.

If the opposing price is short enough, both outcomes can end below zero. The result then shows a modeled loss instead of a profit. The hedge formula explained step by step shows why.

Worked example

  1. A $100 bet at +300 (decimal 4.00) returns $400 if it wins.
  2. The opposing side is +150 (decimal 2.50). $400 ÷ 2.50 = $160 hedge stake.
  3. Total cash staked is $260, so either outcome nets $400 − $260 = $140.

Common questions

No. A hedge can equalize a loss, and prices, fees or settlement differences can change the result.
